Mandalay is Myanmar's second-largest city and the former royal capital of the Burmese kingdom. The city is modernising rapidly, due largely to an influx of Chinese money and businessmen, and while amenities and infrastructure are improving many feel that the charm of old Mandalay is receding. Travellers arriving with no past knowledge of the city won't be burdened by comparison and will no doubt find Mandalay enchanting.

Sightseeing in Mandalay

A relatively young city, Mandalay has a wealth of things to do see and experience during your stay in the city. Here are just some of the iconic sights of Mandalay:

Mandalay Hill:

A 760-foot hill that overlooks the city below. A must experience sight is to lookout over the city at dawn/dusk to see the sun rise/set over the horizon to bathe the city in light or darkness.

Shwe In Bin Kyaung:

Commissioned in 1895, this intricately carved teak monastery is loved by all that visit it. Set upon tree trunk poles, the monastery has a more 'homey' feel to at as opposed to the grand, all golden affairs that its counterparts offer.

Mahamuni Paya:

An extremely popular Buddhist temple in Mandalay. Its popularity comes from the 13tf-tall seated Buddha that is visited by thousands daily.
