Austria has many hidden treasures to explore, including some of the best skiing in the world alongside fantastic aprés ski and friendly locals.

Ski info

Picturesque, wooded slopes characterise Austrian ski holidays, and most areas have plenty for all abilities. They’re lower altitude, which means less snow, but snowmaking is usually good. Some areas are linked by quick and efficient ski buses.

Après

Austria’s known for having the best après ski in the world. Oompah bands and steins of beer fuel a jolly atmosphere, both on the mountain and in the resorts. It often finishes before dinner, but there’s always a late spot close by.

Hotels & accommodation

Most accommodation in Austria is good quality, family-run hotels on a half-board basis, meaning course after course of hardy mountain food. Wellness is a big part of Austrian life, so you can usually expect a spa or at least a sauna and steam room.

Best family ski resorts
Both Scheffau and Galtür have excellent ski school-run kids clubs, while Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein have a range of runs to keep everyone happy.

Best après ski resorts
St Anton is famous for the lively Mooserwirt or Krazy Kanguruh, while Ischgl offers more high-end nightlife. Mayrhofen and Sölden also deserve a mention.

Best beginner ski resorts
Rauris’ excellent ski school and intimate ski area are perfect to learn in, Kaprun’s lifts access plenty of easy terrain and Seefeld has lots to do when legs get tired.

Best intermediate ski resorts
Three-quarters of Schladming’s runs are red, Ellmau’s slopes are helpfully tree-lined and Obergurgl, as the highest ski resort in Austria, can almost always guarantee good snow conditions.
