For those who want to do something a bit different but keep the luxury, cruising the Yasawa Islands in Fiji, exploring the spice plantations of Sri Lanka or searching for the big 5 in South Africa from the comfort of your own lodge are all top recommendations.
Stepping up the adventure level and heading out to really get under the skin of a country can give a totally different perspective, drinking sake with locals in Kyoto, discovering the Terracotta Warriers in Xi'an, visiting a Maouri Marae in New Zealand or catching a train from Delhi to glimpse the Taj Mahal will give you memories for a lifetime.
When you really want to get the blood pumping you could always try scuba diving in Borneo, skiing in Whistler, catching the F1 in Melbourne, kayaking across Abel Tasmin National Park in New Zealand or even hiking the Inca Trail in Peru.
My top destinations :
Japan - Such a different culture it needs to be experienced. So much history mixed with the latest technology and probably the safest country in the world so a great place to get out of your comfort zone.
New Zealand & Canada - Think the Scottish Highlands on an unimaginable scale (and better weather). The most fantastic people, huge landscapes and so much to see and do. If you are a wildlife fan you will not be disappointed, and they both have great wine, outdoor activities and history. Both need a good chunk of time to see property so require an extended or multiple trips to cover it all.
South Africa - Cape Town is magnificent with the backdrop of Table Mountain and a great Mediterranean climate. Stellenbosch offers fantastic wine tasting and you can discover the continents truly unique wildlife in the Kruger area. For those more confident or 2nd time visitors a self-drive from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth or a trip into the Drakensburg mountains shows a different side to South Africa. One of the few countries I would visit again and again.
Dubai - The perfect stopover or short holiday. Guaranteed weather, fantastic hotels, great food and lots to keep you entertained of you don't want to chill by the pool.
Peru - Great for culture and adventure with something for everyone, see the Amazon Rainforest in all its glory and discover the history of the Incas from Cuzco. If you have time, continue south to Bloivia for the salt flats at Uyuni and the witches' markets in La Paz.
