When to Visit

Cambodia's climate is tropical with seasonal monsoons. There are two distinct seasons, the rainy and dry. Temperatures during the rainy season, between June and October, average 81°F to 95°F (27°C to 35°C). The dry season can be divided into cool months, from November till February, with temperatures averaging 63°F to 81°F (17°C to 27°C); and hot months, from March till May, with temperatures averaging 84°F to 100°F (29°C to 38°C). The cooler, dry months of November to February are a pleasant time to visit Cambodia, but the best time to visit does vary depending on desired activities.

The best time to visit Laos is between November and March when it is dry and temperatures are pleasant, although this is high tourist season and accommodation prices may be higher than they are at other times of the year. If you are travelling on a budget it may actually be better to brave the wet season. Having said that, Laos is still an off-the-beaten-track travel destination and you are unlikely to struggle with crowds even during the peak season.

Prevalently warm and dry, the start of the year usually is a great time to visit both Cambodia and Laos. With the temperature rarely dipping below 25 degrees Celcius and regularly reaching over the 30s tourists are guaranteed near perfect sunshine.

Whilst Cambodia remains for the most part very warm and dry during this period, Laos, on the other hand, is entering is rainy period. There is also some celebrations and festivals on during this time. In Cambodia, they will celebrate the Khmer New Year in April and in Laos, they will celebrate the Boun Pi Mai or the Lao New Year.

Wet, warm and wonderful weather washes away any negatives about visiting Cambodia and Laos in the traditional summer months. With the temperatures still firmly locked in the close to the 30s, the frequent rains provide a much welcome respite from the heat.

As we approach the second dry season of the year, the weather starts to get better again. Just some of the many activities you can do during this period include the Pchum Ben in Cambodia and the Boun Ok Phansa festival in Laos.

The peak season has come again for Cambodia, with the weather making you comfortably numb with relaxation. In Laos, the weather is much the same and you would be remiss if you didn't take advantage of the perfect conditions. Pro-tip, book before the holidays as it tends to get more expansive around that time.
