Orlando is an essential part of any Florida holiday, simple
as that. The only problem you'll have is organising your time
because, no matter how long you stay, we guarantee you won't
manage to visit every attraction you want to. A bit of prior
planning goes a long way, so get some kind of rough itinerary
together (after all, the anticipation is all part of the excitement!).
Within Orlando there are 5 broad areas to stay - each with
its own benefits.
Star Attractions
Mini theme parks. One of the most-raved-about roller coasters
on the Strip is the Manhattan Express at New York - New York.
Expect lots of twists, loops, dives and inversions at about
67 miles per hour. Although it's not a roller coaster, the
Big Shot at the Stratosphere gets high marks for scariness.
Imagine being strapped into a chair 1,000 feet above the ground,
then being launched 160 feet up a tower in two seconds. Another
must-see at the Stratosphere is X Scream, which shoots riders
27 feet over the edge of the tower at speeds of up to 30 mph
before pulling them back to safety. We recommend riding both
at night, so try to keep your eyes open for the spectacular
view. In Search of the Obelisk at the Luxor is probably the
highest-impact simulator ride in town, competing with Excalibur's
Merlin's Magic Motion Machines. For true Trekkies, Star Trek:
The Experience is a must. With your admission to one or both
rides (Klingon Encounter and BORG Invasion 4D), you'll also
see Star Trek costumes and props on display while you wait.
And for something completely different, at the Sahara's Cyber
Speedway you sit in a real Indy car and "drive"
through the streets of Las Vegas at 220 miles per hour. This
virtual reality ride is a great way to get rid of road rage.
Las Vegas offers free drinks when you gamble, free lounge
acts, free parking and a few free attractions. MGM MIRAGE
Resorts has made an art of outdoor exhibits with the Sirens
of TI at Treasure Island, the Volcano at the Mirage and the
Fountains at the Bellagio. The Rio's Masquerade Village offers
a "Show in the Sky" that features live music, singing,
dancing, stilt walkers and colorful costumes. This is where
everyone gets those metallic beaded necklaces you've been
seeing around town. Most observers watch the elaborate show
for free, but if you really want to join the fun, pay $9.95,
get in costume and party alongside the performers.
Next, for the mushy, sentimental (but they really are cute)
attraction, visit the MGM Grand's Lion Habitat. The multilevel
viewing area allows you to see several lions and cubs in a
lush environment. Another Vegas must-see that is free of charge
is the Bellagio's Conservatory, gorgeous any time of the year.
The arrangements change based on the season or holiday; you
need to go back each time you visit. One caveat: Children
younger than 18 cannot enter Bellagio unless accompanied by
adults who are guests of the hotel (or who are visiting one
of the hotel's attractions, restaurants or shows).
