The situation is unmatchable, the skiing world class and the nightlife lively. Because the lake straddles the borders of California and Nevada (east) side, you can also have a gamble in the casinos. If you stay south of the lake, your closest ski areas will be Heavenly, Sierra and Kirkwood. North of the lake, you can ski the likes of Northstar, Alpine Meadows and the legendary Squaw Valley., but wherever you stay, using your car or crossing the lake on a paddle steamer, it's possible to ski all over with the interchangeable pass.

Heavenly is the highest and biggest of the mountains clustered around Lake Tahoe, with amazing views. There’s lots of easy off-piste among trees, and some big-time challenges for experts. Lake Tahoe is the snowboarding hub of California too. The new high-speed gondola makes getting from your resort to the slopes a cinch.

Ski Area Terrain

Beginners:
The Californians' friendly hospitality is legendary and if you want to learn to ski in a fun atmosphere, then either Heavenly or Sierra at Tahoe are great places to start.

Intermediates:
Heavenly is huge in itself with acres of prime skiing plus views of the lake and Nevada. An unforgettable day out from Heavenly takes you on the Tahoe Queen Paddle Steam wheeler across the lake, to be met by a ski shuttle bus to the world class Olympic resort of Squaw Valley.

Advanced:
There is plenty at Heavenly designed to keep advanced skiers happy and Kirkwood and Squaw Valley also have some spectacularly challenging skiing. Try the Gunbarrel on the Californian side of Heavenly for a chance to show off under the chairlift, or tackle the diamond blacks for which Squaw is famous.

Snowboarders:
Up and coming boarders can try the 'Shred-Ready' snowboard lessons at Heavenly, which also has its own snowboard park on the upper Nevada side. Experienced boarders head for the powder on Milky Way Bowl, the open snow bowls of Squaw Valley or the superb natural terrain of Alpine Meadows.
