Barrow in Furness, Cumbria has received a major jobs boost after a travel Barrhead Travel open for business in an iconic town centre building. Barrhead Travel has taken on the top floor and part of the ground floor of Emlyn Hughes House in Barrow.
About 40 people, many of whom faced redundancy with Barrow-based Cumbria Cruise Centre, have been taken on by the Glasgow-based firm, About 25 of those started on induction yesterday and were undergoing systems training today ahead of the phones going live next week at what is Barrhead’s first English base.
Company chairman Bill Munro said: “It is our intention to expand here. “We have got enough room, and an option on the ground floor, to accommodate 70 or 80 people. “It depends on the take-up of the business. “We are offering tailor-made holidays; long haul holidays, cruises, and hopefully there is the business for us to go into the corporate market as well.”

"BARROW’S jobs market was given a major boost today with news that a Scottish travel agent plans to open a call centre in the town. Glasgow-based agency Barrhead Travel is set to open its first English base in Barrow, as part of its expansion plans south of the border Many of the 55 workers whose jobs were at risk of redundancy at Cumbria Cruise Centre are likely to be offered work at the new centre.
Barrhead Travel managing director Jacqueline Dobson told the Evening Mail that between 40 and 50 jobs would be created by the new call centre which would open in four to six weeks’ time. She said the site for the centre, which will also have a walk-in travel agency, was still being negotiated with one of two options being discussed.
She said: “We chose Barrow because of the skilled, experienced, fantastic staff who are being made redundant and because we want to expand our business.” The 37-year-old family-run business employs 550 people in 34 offices across Scotland and also has a travel agency and small call centre in Belfast. The Barrow centre will be its first offices in England.
The firm plans to expand further in Barrow in the next six months and will be exploring the corporate travel market. The company, which recently won Scottish large travel agent of the year, and UK cruise agent of the year, was named one of the top 100 companies to work for in the UK in a Sunday Times poll".
