This is the largest and most significant monument south of the Sahara. On top of a hill, a dry stone citadel set among giant boulders overlooks the valley. It is a breathtaking view. Everything has been constructed entirely without mortar - a minllion stones, each balancing upon the next. Tourist facilities are excellent and a whole day visit is strongly recommended. Nearby Lake Mtirikwe is a popular watersports resort, with excursions to bird-rich islands and pony trekking in the game reserve on the north shore.
Just an hour by air from Harare, the Victoria Falls is the world's most spectacular natural wonder. Viewing points opposite the cataracts are reached by paths through an exotic rain forest which has sprung up in the arc of the spray. Pleasure boats cruise the placid waters upstream at sunset, when crocodiles and hippos can be seen at close quarters. Below the Falls, the turbulent river offers challenging white-water rafting.
With 35 large mammal species of animal and 400 kinds of birds, Hwange has a density and variety of wildlife comparable with anywhere in the continent. The park's 500 km network of game viewing roads is criss-crossed by great herds of elephant and buffalo. Family groups of rhino and giraffe, zebra and a score of predators, including lion and leopard.
