| Useful
information & places to see |
|
Information:
Lanzarote covers about 350 square miles of land. Whilst famous
for its lunar landscape and volcanic rock, it also boasts some
of the most glorious sandy beaches to be found anywhere in the
world. A perfect place to enjoy the stunning sunsets for which
the island is renown.
Places to see:
Timanfaya National Park provides
the opportunity of taking a camel ride through the dramatic
volcanic terrain of the Fire Mountain.
Visit the stunning Cactus Garden, designed by César Manrique.
Reclaimed from a disused quarry, it has over 1,400 varieties
of cacti and more than 10,000 plants! You can see that cacti
have some of the most spectacular flowers to be found anywhere
in the world - and are not all spikey!
Cueva de los Verdes is a network
of underground caves with the longest volcanic tunnel in the
world. There is a stunning optical illusion at the end of the
hour-long guided tour.
The Water Grotto is a must too with the unique albino crab -
found nowhere else on the planet; so close to the surface. Also
well worth a visit is the weekly Sunday market in Teguise. Starting
at 09:00, it bustles with activity and anyone who enjoys a good
barter is guaranteed one here!
Whilst there is no shortage of pizza, pasta and paella, typical
Canarian food is thick meat or fish stews served with bread.
Watercress soup is also a local speciality. A traditional starter
would be shrimps in hot garlic oil or octopus.
Also worth a try is meat, fish or vegetables served 'con mojo'.
Mojo verde being a cool sauce flavoured with parsley and coriander
whilst mojo rojo is a hotter proposition altogether made with
chillies and peppers. Fish served as a main course will be simply
prepared - either grilled or fried and served with a salad.
Locally produced wine is also worth tasting. |
