Only ¾ ml by ½ ml in area, a traveller could well pass through the village without realising it, missing an opportunity to see the oldest human settlement on the Amalfi Coast. With a population of about 3,000, it is today a picturesque collection of white and pastel dwellings rising steeply either side of a narrow village centre dominated by the Basilica of San Trofimena. Stepped streets, shadowy alleys and arched tunnels give stimulating access to a 1st-century AD Roman villa with mosaics and frescoes, a couple of distinctive churches, old manor houses, a watchtower and ancient flour mills. |
