A well-spread-out resort linked up by long, hilly, winding lanes. Covering about 1½ mls N to S and ¾ ml E to W, most accommodation is found along the coast in scattered studios built among the olive groves. The pace of life is sedate with little in the way of things to do and see. More typically Greek than any other resort on the island; you are more likely to see a donkey here than anywhere else. |
| Suitability |
Popular with middlemarket British and German clientele with Italians and Greeks visiting in midsummer. Most suited to older couples and families as there is little in the way of evening entertainment. |
| Accommodation |
Mostly basic self-catering studios with no pool facilities, but there is a handful of 3- and 4-star hotels. |
| Beach |
Several sandy beaches separated by jutting rocks with a few secluded coves in places; undoubtedly the best on the island. Mavratzis Beach is 350 yds long, has a couple of sizeable snack bars and is dominated by a group of 4-star hotels. St Nicholas Beach is just over ½ ml long and has 2 large lively snack bars. Banana Beach is also about ½ ml long and is favoured by Scandinavians as a naturist beach; it has a couple of tavernas and water sports. Gerakas Beach is ½ ml long and sheltered from the wind by low cliffs; however large sections may be off-limits due to turtle activity. All beaches are gently shelving and offer sunbeds and parasols for hire. Water sports are available in the main part of the resort. |
| Shopping |
A couple of tourist shops and a few minimarkets, mostly concentrated along a 300-yd stretch of the main road out of the resort. |
| Entertainment |
Daytime: sunbathing, water sports, and long walks in the mountains and pine forests.
Nightlife: just a scattering of bars (a few playing loud music) along and up from the beach and on the main road; not for night owls. |
| Eating |
Several traditional Greek tavernas. |
| Public
Transport |
Small number of taxis available in Vasilikos, otherwise Argassi has a supply; failing that, Zakynthos. |
| Excursions |
Available from the larger resorts on the island. Evening: Greek night with traditional Greek food, dancers and singers. Full day: island tour; boat trip to Kefalonia; various other boat tours; Olympia in mainland Greece, home of the Olympic games. 2 days: Athens. |
| Location |
On the SE coast of the island. 11 mls SE of Zakynthos and 12 mls SE of the airport. |
| Position |
On one of 2 peninsulas that extend SE from the island like pincers. The tree-covered Skopos mountain provides a green backdrop to the resort, which is set among acres of flat land planted with olive trees. |
