Wales

Wales is especially family friendly. The variety it packs into its scenery is reflected in the huge choice of things to see and do for visitors of all ages. You can ride a narrow-gauge railway to the summit of Snowdon, the highest mountain in England and Wales. Or go underground in the Brecon Beacons and explore the dramatic subterranean world of the National Showcaves Centre. Along the 750-mile coastline, there's everything from big sandy beaches to small, secluded coves, popular resorts to peaceful sailing centres.

Pony trekking, sailing, surfingand cycling are just a few of the activities on offer here. Attractions include theme and amusement parks, award-winning zoos and farms that welcome visitors. Then there are Wales's world-class castles and historic places - not to mention truly unique attractions such as the child-friendly Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth and the enchanting fairytale village of Portmeirion

High mountains, rushing rivers, placid lakes, and a long coastline of beaches, bays and estuaries ... Wales is made for activity holidays. It's one of the UK's most popular walking destinations. Pony trekkers and mountain bikers love Wales's rolling, grassy landscapes. Sailors can explore sheltered inlets and the open seas, while surfers can ride the waves on west-facing beaches. There's a host of other adrenaline-inducing activities too - everything from abseiling to white-water rafting, hang gliding to parascending. Or you can refresh mind and spirit through yoga and alternative therapies.

The status of Harlech Castle is reinforced by its acceptance as a World Heritage Site and the sheer spectacle of its location. There is an astounding view from the south of Harlech town: of the castle, sea backdrop and mountain scenery.

Built on an almost vertical cliff face, Harlech Castle forms part of the historic 'iron ring' of castles. These were built to repress potential Welsh insurrection, and surround the coastal fringes of Snowdonia, stretching from Flint around to Aberystwyth.
