In the 1960s, Porticcio was nothing more than a coast road with deserted beaches and small rocky coves, but the fashion for sun, sand and sea in recent years has rocketed it into one of the island's major resorts. Stretching some 5 mls along the coast and straggling 1 ml inland, its permanent population of 2,500 explodes into 50,000 at the height of summer. Guests occupy a handful of hotels, several holiday villages and hillsides of low-rise, self-catering apartments. The seafront strip consists of souvenir, beachwear and handicrafts shops, cafes, snack bars, restaurants and car-hire offices catering for all holiday needs. |
