Canada, Vancouver...
Description

Vancouver is a dazzling city. Barely a century old, it offers a vibrant cosmopolitan character. Its rich Chinese influence derives from the first wave of Chinese who came seeking gold in the 1850s and went on to build the Canadian Pacific Railroad. More recently there was an influx from Hong Kong prior to the handing over of the British Colony to China.

Vancouver is possessed of staggering natural beauty. Beaches rim the coast, and the Coast Range provides a backdrop to Vancouver's sleek skyscrapers. In its temperate climate, magnificent gardens and an active lifestyle flourish.
Runners and inline skaters are everywhere. One of Vancouver's most beloved natural resources is Stanley Park, a 1000-acre wonderland filled with lakes and trails that's also home to the Vancouver Aquarium.

Much of downtown Vancouver is situated in False Creek, once a tiny fishing settlement and now a thriving urban neighborhood. Wander along the seawall by marinas and harbor-front neighborhoods. Visit Granville Island and its famous public market. Where the good life is on obvious display, Point Grey in West Vancouver makes a wonderful excursion. This enclave of lovely homes, yacht clubs, and interesting shops is set against spectacular trees.
Descend the steep stairs to the Point Grey beach and look up at all the magnificent houses. In contrast, Burrard Inlet is the busiest West Coast port, where it's fascinating to watch the loading of cargo containers designated for far-off lands.

One of the best ways to experience Vancouver is by sea kayak. Stick close to shore and explore Burrard Inlet. The more adventurous might paddle from Deep Cove to Indian Arm, which cuts into the Coast Range and is bounded by old growth forests and waterfalls. After an active day, head back to one of Vancouver's luxurious hotels and tuck into a world-class meal in the city famous for its fusion cuisine.

Climate

Warmed by Pacific Ocean currents and protected by a range of mountains, Vancouver enjoys mild temperatures year-round. From high 70's Fahrenheit (low 20's Celsius) in summer to a mild mid 40's Fahrenheit (0º to 5º Celsius) in winter, the climate is always hospitable. Our winters are wet, but it rarely snows, except on our local ski hills.

Currency
We recommend all visitors use Canadian currency when traveling within Canada. Visitors can exchange currency at Canadian chartered banks, trust companies, credit unions, or at offices of foreign exchange brokers, but it is advised to have local currency on hand prior to arriving. Some hotels, merchants, restaurants and suppliers accept US or other foreign currency at a pre-determined rate, which may differ from the daily rate posted by financial institutions.
Travelers cheques
Travelers cheques in Canadian dollars are the safest and most convenient way to carry money. They are widely accepted and can be cashed at banks or foreign exchange brokers. Identification may be required when cashing travelers cheques.
Languages spoken

Canada has two official languages - English and French. English is the predominant language in British Columbia.

Vancouver is quite cosmopolitan and is a mix of many multicultural groups. Because of this, the city is considered multilingual on an unofficial level. Many banks, hotels, airline offices, service institutions, shops and key tourist destinations have multi-lingual staff.

After English and Chinese, the most common mother tongue languages spoken are Punjabi, German, Italian, French, Tagalog (Filipino) and Spanish.

Food & Beverages

An extensive variety of cuisine is available representing the multicultural flavour of Vancouver. Fine dining, casual or family friendly restaurants are easily accessible throughout Greater Vancouver.

Alcoholic beverages in bottles are sold in special 'Liquor' stores. However, alcoholic beverages including beer and wine may be purchased in "Licensed Premises" establishments, such as restaurants, hotel lounges, pubs, and nightclubs. Minors are not admitted into bars. In BC, minors are defined as anyone under 19 years of age.

Tipping
Some properties and resort hotels include tips or gratuities with tours group to simplify bookkeeping. This will usually include gratuities for housekeeping, bell service and food service. If meals are included in the price, customary gratuity will be calculated at 15 per cent. Visitors should be advised that the standard tip in most restaurants is 15 per cent.
